The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has made it possible for citizens to renew their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) entirely online, saving applicants long queues at registration centres across the country.

Through the Pak-ID web portal and mobile application, applicants can submit their renewal request, upload a fresh photograph and fingerprints, and pay the fee digitally. The renewed card is then delivered to the applicant's home address by courier.

How to renew your CNIC online

First, create an account on the Pak-ID portal or mobile app using your existing CNIC number and a verified mobile phone number. Second, select the renewal service and confirm your personal details as they appear on your current card. Third, upload a recent photograph with a plain background and capture your fingerprints using the app's guided process. Fourth, pay the renewal fee through a debit or credit card, mobile wallet or online banking. Finally, track your application status through the same portal until the card is dispatched.

Fees and processing time

The normal renewal fee remains the most economical option, with delivery typically within two to three weeks. Urgent and executive categories are available at higher fees for applicants who need the card sooner, with executive applications processed in a matter of days.

Officials say the online system is part of a broader push to digitise citizen services and reduce pressure on NADRA registration centres, particularly in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Overseas Pakistanis can also use the same platform to renew their National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP).

Applicants are advised to ensure their mobile number is registered in their own name before starting the process, as verification codes are sent by SMS. Those whose records require biometric re-verification may still be asked to visit a centre in some cases.
